A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending the Atlanta Fine Arts League, Inc., and its "Art From the Heart" capitol exhibit; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the Atlanta Fine Arts League, Inc., was created in 2005 by a group of Atlanta area artists as a catalyst for its inaugural community project, "Art From the Heart," a project where local artists donated their time and talents to create portraits of Georgia's service men and women who have died in the line of duty while serving their country in Afghanistan and Iraq; and

WHEREAS, these portraits are for the families left behind, and each family receives a donated 20x24" head and shoulders portrait of their fallen hero; and

WHEREAS, the creators of "Art From the Heart" are Lisa Gleim-Jonas, Geri Zaki, Leah Henry, Fran Milner, Sherry Needle, and Larry Hall; and

WHEREAS, in the "Art From the Heart" capitol exhibit, there are currently portraits of the following fallen heroes on display: Private First Class Daniel Allman, First Lieutenant Tyler Hall Brown, Captain Hayes Clayton, Jr., Marine Sergeant Kelley Courtney, Army Sergeant Philip A. Dobson, Jr., Army Staff Sergeant Marion Flint, Jr., Army Specialist Marcus Futrell, First Lieutenant Ashley L. Henderson Huff, Army Specialist Justin Jarrett, Army Specialist Justin Johnson, Marine Lance Corporal Stephen F. Johnson, Private First Class Kenneth E. "Aaron" Kincaid IV, Army Corporal Victor Langorica, Army Corporal William "Bill" Long, Air Force Senior Airman Jason D. Nathan, Marine Corporal William G. Taylor, Private First Class Diego Rincon, Sergeant Paul Anthony Saylor, Sergeant Jonathan B. Shields, Army Sergeant Michael James Stokely, Sergeant Thomas J. Strickland, Sergeant Patrick S. Tainsh, Master Sergeant Thomas R. Thigpen, Private Charles Scott Walker, and Command Sergeant Major Donovan Earl Watts; and

WHEREAS, there are currently over 70 portraits completed or in progress and 45 artists committed to this project; and

WHEREAS, area businesses have donated numerous supplies and become valued sponsors; and

WHEREAS, this project has met with tremendous response from the Atlanta press, with articles in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and other local newspapers, video broadcasts on all four Atlanta television news programs, and a 24 page spread in Atlanta Style & Design; and

WHEREAS, news of the project has traveled outside of Georgia, with people contacting the Atlanta Fine Arts League asking for assistance in implementing a similar program in states from as far away as Texas, Kansas, Missouri, South Carolina, California, and North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, Georgia Public Broadcasting's State of the Arts will broadcast a program it produced in which three of the artists and families were followed as they went through the process of contacting the families and completing the portraits; and

WHEREAS, as long as Georgia soldiers continue to die in Iraq and Afghanistan, the artists of the Atlanta Fine Arts League are committed to continuing "Art From the Heart."

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that this body recognizes and commends the Atlanta Fine Arts League, Inc., and its project, "Art From the Heart," and its efforts to commemorate the brave soldiers that have given their lives for the State of Georgia and our country during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Atlanta Fine Arts League, Inc.
