A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Steve Lundquist; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Steve Lundquist is the personification of excellence in competitive swimming and winner of two Olympic gold medals at the 1984 Summer Olympic Games; and

WHEREAS, Steve Lundquist is one of Clayton County´s most beloved and famous citizens and a 1979 graduate of Jonesboro High School; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Lundquist was a member of the 1980 Olympic Team that did not participate in Moscow as part of the Unites States boycott but returned to the Olympic team in 1984, winning gold medals in the 100-meter breaststroke and the 400-meter medley relay; and

WHEREAS, he broke his first world record when he was only 17 and was the first swimmer to break two minutes in the 200-yard breaststroke, going on to win every 100-yard breaststroke event he entered from 1980 to 1983; and

WHEREAS, in 1996, Steve Lundquist played a major role when the Summer Olympic Games were hosted by Atlanta, and he was accorded the honor of being an Olympic flag bearer; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Lundquist continues to serve his community by volunteering to work for many charitable organizations; and

WHEREAS, in May, 2006, the Clayton County Board of Commissioners and the Clayton County School Board chose to recognize Steve Lundquist by dedicating the Steve Lundquist Aquatic Center in his honor; and

WHEREAS, this150-meter Olympic-sized pool which seats 250 spectators provides a unique opportunity for the county to turn out future champions and support the county´s youth; and
WHEREAS, the Steve Lundquist Aquatic Center represents the characteristics exemplified by this true American sports hero: "respect, sportsmanship, pride, tolerance, and honesty"; and

WHEREAS, he is a shining example of the important impact that the efforts and spirit of individual athletes make on the quality of life received by the young people of this state, and it is abundantly fitting and proper that his amazing accomplishments and contributions be appropriately recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body heartily and gratefully commend Olympic gold medalist Steve Lundquist for his accomplishments and contributions on behalf of swimming in Georgia and for the positive influence he has had upon the lives and futures of countless young people in this state and extend to him their most sincere best wishes for continued success, health, and happiness in the future.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Steve Lundquist.
