A RESOLUTION


Honoring and remembering the life of Morgan Grier Murphy; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Mr. Morgan Grier Murphy was a graduate of Albany High School, Brevard College in Brevard, North Carolina, and the School of Banking at Louisiana State University; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Murphy was an admired businessman, family man, and community leader in Albany, Georgia; and

WHEREAS, he served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict from 1950 through 1954; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Murphy had an illustrious career in banking which began in 1949 with the Bank of Albany; the First State Bank and Trust Company, 1950; and the First State Bank and Trust Company, 1954; and

WHEREAS, in 1972 he was named president and chief executive officer of First State Bank and Trust Company; became president and chief executive officer of First State Corporation at the time it was organized in 1981; was named chairman of the board in 1993; and when First State Corporation merged with Regions Bank in 1998, he was named chairman of Regions Bank of South Georgia; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Murphy excelled in serving his community in that Albany, the State of Georgia, and many national associations benefited from his leadership and support; and

WHEREAS, he was a successful athlete, an avid outdoorsman, and a wonderful husband and father who will be missed by his family and many friends; and

WHEREAS, while in life he commanded the esteem of his fellow Georgians, in his death we mingle our sympathies with the grief of his family and friends.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join together to express their deepest regret at the passing of Mr. Morgan Grier Murphy and extend their most sincere condolences to his family.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mr. Morgan Grier Murphy.
