RESOLUTION
Honoring
and remembering the life of Henry Scott Verner; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
Henry Scott Verner was born September 8, 1924, in Retreat, South Carolina, at
the Verner family home known as "Bachelor's Retreat" and moved to Watkinsville,
Georgia, in 1926; and
WHEREAS,
he married Sara Davis Breedlove on September 6, 1947, and throughout his life he
was the loving protector of five children, the guardian of his nephew and niece,
and an inexhaustible source of warmth and guidance for his 18 grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS,
when his three older brothers were called to service during World War II, he
assumed full responsibility for operating the family dairy operation of
approximately 35 milk cows; and
WHEREAS,
he began managing farm operations in Rutledge, Georgia, and Morgan County for T.
R. Breedlove in March of 1949, and under his astute management, the Breedlove
family farms in Morgan County evolved over the years into a diversified 1,300
acre operation with over 1,000 head of beef cattle; and
WHEREAS,
he established Verner Farms, a 200 acre enterprise in beef cattle, poultry, and
Bermuda hay, in 1975 and formed the Verner Farms Partnership with his son, Alan,
in 1979; and the business has since grown into a successful 800 acre enterprise;
and
WHEREAS,
he was appointed to the Walton EMC Board of Directors in June 1958 and has
served with distinction in a number of board capacities such as secretary and treasurer, vice president, and president, retiring in 2003 after 45 years of exceptional service; and

WHEREAS,
he was the distinguished recipient of a number of honors, including the 1990
Farm Family Leadership and Achievement Award from the Morgan County Chamber of
Commerce, the 1992 Commercial Cattlemen of the Year from the Georgia Cattlemen's
Association, and the 1997 Centennial Family Farm Designation from the State of
Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
he served his neighbors faithfully as a member of the Morgan County Planning and
Zoning Commission, the Northeast Georgia Regional Economic Development Board,
the director of the Bank of Morgan County, a founding board member of Rutledge
Academy, a director of the Morgan County Farm Bureau, and the director of the
Farmers Home Administration; and
WHEREAS,
in 2005, he was honored with Morgan County's first Yellow Dog Democrat Award
from a distinguished former member of this body, the Honorable E. Roy Lambert,
on behalf of the Morgan County Democrats at their inaugural Jefferson-Jackson
Dinner; and
WHEREAS,
he was known for over 30 years for passing out peppermint candy to everyone he
came in contact with and was later given the title of "Peppermint Pop" by one of
his grandchildren; and
WHEREAS,
in all of his endeavors, Henry served his family, friends, neighbors, and his
Savior with the utmost love and devotion, and it is fitting and proper to honor
such a distinguished leader of the community and accomplished citizen of
Georgia.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in
honoring and remembering the numerous outstanding accomplishments of Henry Scott
Verner, expressing their deepest regret at his passing, and extending their most
sincere condolences to his family.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Henry Scott
Verner.
