A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Kay Read on the occasion of her retirement as editor of
The Albany
Herald; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
during her 14-year tenure as editor of
The Albany
Herald, Kay Read has contributed vastly to
improving the professionalism and community involvement of the newspaper, and
she has provided her capable leadership to nearly every aspect of public life in
Albany; and
WHEREAS,
she is a celebrated graduate of Baylor University and has served as a visiting
professor at the University of Missouri School of Journalism, where she provided
her professional expertise as an editing instructor and consultant for the
campus newspaper; and
WHEREAS,
she began her journalism career in her native Texas, and she joined the
Kansas City
Star in 1971, became the senior editor for
features at the New
York Post in 1989, and worked with a
public relations agency in New York City before coming to Albany in August of
1992; and
WHEREAS,
she is president of the Georgia Associated Press Association Council and is a
member of the board of directors of the Georgia First Amendment Foundation, the
Georgia Chamber of Commerce, and the Georgia Partnership for Excellence in
Education, and she has tirelessly served the community of Albany on the Albany
Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Committee, the Albany Rotary Club, the
Southwest Georgia Alliance for Progress, and the Southwest Georgia Cancer
Coalition executive committee; and
WHEREAS,
throughout her career she has maintained a laudable commitment to diversity of
opinion, preferring editorials that incite conversation rather than consensus,
and she has transformed the newspaper into a positive force within the community
that empowers readers with the information they need to take action on their
own; and
WHEREAS,
she was selected from a field of 39 applicants to become president of the
Cartersville-Bartow County Chamber of Commerce, and she leaves
The Albany Herald
to direct a five-person staff and a
Chamber of Commerce that has about 1,400 members; and
WHEREAS,
as she has commanded the esteem of her colleagues and neighbors, her unshakable
commitment to her community has brought honor to the State of
Georgia.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in
commending Kay Read for her 14 years of outstanding service and leadership with
The Albany Herald, congratulating her on her new appointment, and extending to her the best of wishes for her continued success, health, and fulfillment in all her endeavors.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Kay Read.
