RESOLUTION
Recognizing
Gladys Lynes Hamilton Blue; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Gladys Lynes Hamilton Blue was born in Dale, South Carolina, on March 25, 1907;
and
WHEREAS,
she was the youngest daughter of sharecropper John Hamilton and housewife Essie
Hamilton; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton had five children and moved their family to Coosawatchie,
South Carolina, where Gladys and her brothers and sisters started their
education, walking many miles to school, fishing in the Coosawatchie River, and
taking care of each other; and
WHEREAS,
she married Albert Blue on March 16, 1933, and moved with her young family to
Savannah, Georgia, where Gladys worked for lawyer Lawton Calhoun for 40 years;
and
WHEREAS,
Gladys became a member of First Bryan Baptist Church, the oldest African Baptist
Church in the United States; and
WHEREAS,
Gladys helped her sister, Anne Mae, and her daughter, Katherine, when she became
sick, assisting them in moving to Savannah and adopting Katherine upon Anne
Mae´s death; and
WHEREAS,
Gladys and Albert had six more wonderful children and continued to live in
Savannah; and
WHEREAS,
their children went to war, continued their education, married, and had their
own children; and
WHEREAS,
Gladys continues to live in Savannah where she is deeply cherished by her 16
grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren and
continues to attend historic First Bryan Baptist Church where she is one of the
oldest members; and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Blue is an extraordinary woman of magnanimous strengths with an
unimpeachable reputation for integrity and compassion, and it is abundantly
fitting and proper for this body to recognize this distinguished
Georgian.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize
Gladys Lynes Hamilton Blue for her extraordinary life and extend to her their
most sincere best wishes for continued health and happiness.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Gladys Lynes Hamilton
Blue.
