RESOLUTION
Commending
Dr. James "Jim" and Carolyn Story on the occasion of the 30th Annual Rose City
Run; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia has known few citizens who have contributed more to their
community than Dr. James "Jim" and Carolyn Story of Thomasville;
and
WHEREAS,
the name "Heart Break Hill" has a special significance for the thousands of
runners from Georgia and throughout the nation that have crossed the finish line
of the Rose City Run, an annual footrace event organized by Jim and Carolyn
Story; and
WHEREAS,
in 2002, the Rose City Run was named in the
Running Journal
as the best small community race in
America, and each year the race's reputation continues to grow, attracting
approximately 2,000 participants annually; and
WHEREAS,
Jim and Carolyn Story were selected as two of the 10,000 Community Hero
Torchbearers for the Centennial Olympics in 1996, and they have received a
number of honors for their service as race directors, including the Race
Director of the Year Award from the Gulfwind Track Club in 1985 and the
Thomasville-Thomas County Chamber of Commerce Man and Woman of the Year Award in
1996; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Jim Story attended Emory University and graduated from the Medical College
of Georgia in 1965, where he served on the Honor Council, and he served his
country nobly in the First Infantry Division as a Battalion Surgeon in Vietnam;
and
WHEREAS,
he was one of the most highly decorated physicians in the Vietnam conflict,
receiving such honors as the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Bronze Star with First
Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Medal, the Soldier's Medal, the Combat Medical Badge,
the Vietnam Medal, and the Purple Heart; and
WHEREAS,
he presented a paper at the Southern Medical Association in 1971 entitled
"Ingestion of Mineral Acid," and his writings were published in the February
1974 issue of The American Surgeon; and
WHEREAS,
in 1972, Jim and Carolyn moved to their beloved Thomasville, where Jim began
practicing general surgery with Dr. A. A. Zavaleta; and
WHEREAS,
since Dr. Jim Story was named President of Archbold Memorial Hospital on October
25, 2000, it has become one of the country's premiere healthcare delivery
systems and has acquired such cutting edge technologies as the Gamma Knife and
the 64-slice CT scanner, earning the hospital a reputation as a "big city
hospital in a small town setting"; and
WHEREAS,
in 2006, Archbold Medical Center provided more than $8.8 million in charity care
and free work to the citizens of south Georgia and north Florida, and it still
managed to achieve one of its best financial years in its 81 years of service;
and
WHEREAS,
Carolyn Marie Story received a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from
Tift University, which merged with Mercer University in 1986, and earned her
degree as a Registered Nurse at the University Hospital School of Nursing in
Augusta; and
WHEREAS,
Carolyn has actively participated in a number of civic organizations, including
the Thomas County Chamber of Commerce Leadership Class, the Thomas Technical
Institute Foundation Board of Trustees, the board of the Music and Drama Troupe,
the Advisory Board of Directors of SunTrust Bank, the Crippled Children's
Clinic, and the American Cancer Society, and she was elected the first female
chairperson of the Thomasville Planning and Zoning Board in 1992;
and
WHEREAS,
their dedication to the community is surpassed only by their loving devotion to
their children, Shawn Marie and Jamie, and to each other over the course of 43
years of wonderful marriage.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in
recognizing Dr. James "Jim" and Carolyn Story on the occasion of the 30th Annual
Rose City Run, commending them for their indefatigable efforts to serve the
community, and extending to them their sincerest best wishes for a golden
tomorrow.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. James "Jim" and
Carolyn Story.
