RESOLUTION
Honoring
and commemorating the creation of Morgan County and its 200th anniversary; and
for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the great County of Morgan was created on December 12, 1807, by an Act of the
Georgia General Assembly and was named for Brigadier General Daniel Morgan who
fought in the American Revolutionary War, leading the victory at Cowpens, South
Carolina; and
WHEREAS,
2007 marks the 200th year of its existence and, as such, Morgan County honors
this illustrious milestone with a bicentennial celebration; and
WHEREAS,
Morgan County is one of the state´s most beautiful counties with majestic
rolling countryside, magnificent antebellum homes, and a wonderful display of
true Southern hospitality; and
WHEREAS,
Morgan County is made up of friendly Southern cities including Madison, its
county seat, Rutledge, Bostwick, Buckhead, Apalachee, and Godfrey;
and
WHEREAS,
Morgan County has become a vital and important part of Georgia and a wonderful
and welcoming home to many of this state´s great citizens and provides an
outstanding quality of life for its more than 15,000 residents, including 4,301
Georgia families; and
WHEREAS,
Morgan County is also known for its many historical markers recognizing
important events which occurred there, including Civil War events and the Oliver
Hardy (of Laurel and Hardy), Genius of Comedy Historical Marker; and Madison,
its county seat, is also noted for hosting the Centennial Olympic Torch Relay on
July 15, 1996; and
WHEREAS,
it is abundantly fitting and proper that this body join in the recognition of
this significant historical milestone.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that this body honors and commemorates
the 200th anniversary of Morgan County and extends to each and every resident of
the county best wishes on this auspicious occasion and wishes them many more
years of health and prosperity.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the representatives of
Morgan County.
