Senate
Resolution 293
By:
Senators Seay of the 34th and Davenport of the 44th
A
RESOLUTION
Commending
the E. W. Oliver Elementary School "mathletes"; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
in January, 2007, the brightest mathematical minds of the fourth and fifth
grades at E. W. Oliver Elementary School in Clayton County traveled to
Charlotte, North Carolina, for a contest to determine which school would carry
home bragging rights as winners of a mathematics competition; and
WHEREAS,
although the Clayton mathletes were apprehensive about going up against the math
magnet school for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg County School System, in a state
that ranks 10th nationally in math SAT scores, the students drew confidence from
their principal, Dr. Ronald Boykins, a no-nonsense former Army officer who is
largely responsible for the program; and
WHEREAS,
each student began the competition with eight cards, and with each wrong answer
a card was taken away; and
WHEREAS,
at the end of the hour and a half time limit, the E. W. Oliver students ruled,
with the fifth graders winning 129 to 43 and the fourth graders winning 81 to
62; and
WHEREAS,
in a show of sportsmanship virtually unknown in the sports arena, the North
Carolina students cheered and congratulated the Clayton Countians on their
victory; and
WHEREAS,
it is heartening to see such excellence in skill and in spirit, and the students
of E. W. Oliver are to be commended and congratulated.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend
the mathletes of E. W. Oliver Elementary School for their display of
mathematical skill and the true spirit of competition.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. Ronald Boykins on
behalf of all of the students.
