A RESOLUTION


Honoring Dr. George O. McCalep; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Dr. George O. McCalep began his pastorate at Greenforest Baptist Church in Decatur, Georgia in 1979, and since that time the congregation has expanded from 25 souls to over 6,000 active members, and in 1988 the church moved into a new facility purchased for $10 million and operates the largest predominantly African American school in the country, the Greenforest-McCalep Christian Academic Center, with an enrollment of 1,000 students; and

WHEREAS, under Dr. McCalep´s direction, Greenforest has undertaken a number of important large-scale community initiatives, including a 161-unit apartment complex, managed by the Green Forest Community Development Corporation, and the South DeKalb Church Federal Credit Union, a credit union owned cooperatively by participating members of five neighboring churches of different denominations; and

WHEREAS, his success in leadership has resulted in Dr. McCalep´s national recognition as a leading authority on the subjects of church growth, stewardship, evangelism, church economic empowerment, Sunday school growth, and church leadership; and

WHEREAS, he is active in community affairs, he is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority and a former adjunct professor of church growth and development at Luther Rice Bible College and Seminary, and he currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Morehouse School of Religion; and

WHEREAS, he is a best-selling author on church growth and spiritual development, having published his first book, Faithful Over a Few Things - Seven Critical Church Growth Principles, in 1996, and subsequent books include Breaking the Huddle; Growing Up to the Head - Ten Growth Essentials to Becoming a Better Christian; Stir up the Gifts - Empowering Believers for Victorious Living and Ministry Tasks; A Good Black Samaritan; Sin in the House - Ten Crucial Church Problems with Cleansing Solutions; Praising the Hell Out of Yourself; How to Be Blessed: Finding Favor with God and Man; Faith Raising vs. Money Raising: An Approach to Doing Stewardship God´s Way; Fulfillment Hour: A Nontraditional Sunday School Model; When Black Men Stretch Their Hands to God: Messages Affirming the Black Biblical Heritage; Seven Weeks of Growing Up to the Head; and Church Growth Made Simple: Twenty Simple Changes Guaranteed to Transform Your Church; and

WHEREAS, he is founder and owner-manager of three successful for profit ministries, Orman Press, Ormanpress.com, and The McCalep Group, as well as two nonprofit corporations, the Cushite Movement and the McCalep-Antioch-Cushite Fellowship of Churches; and

WHEREAS, Dr. McCalep has been married for 44 years to the former Sadie Turner, his sweetheart since high school, and the couple has three sons, Michael, George III, and Timothy, and three grandsons.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join to recognize and honor Dr. George O. McCalep for his many accomplishments, and especially for his towering contributions to his community and this state.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. George O. McCalep.
