Senate
Resolution 127
By:
Senators Thomas of the 2nd, Goggans of the 7th, Staton of the 18th, Johnson of
the 1st, Williams of the 19th and others
ADOPTED
SENATE
A
RESOLUTION
Urging
counties and municipalities in Georgia to take proactive measures towards
reducing underage drinking; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
alcohol use by young people is extremely dangerous both to themselves and to
society at large since underage alcohol use is associated with traffic
fatalities, violence, unsafe sex, suicide, educational failure, and other
problem behaviors that diminish the prospects of future success and create
health risks; and
WHEREAS,
despite these serious concerns, the media continue to make drinking look
attractive to our youth and it remains easy for teenagers to get access to
alcohol; and
WHEREAS,
underage drinking costs the nation a conservatively estimated $53 billion
dollars annually and more young people drink alcohol than smoke tobacco or use
marijuana; and
WHEREAS,
reducing underage drinking requires a cooperative effort from all levels of
government, federal, state and local, as well as alcohol manufacturers and
retailers, the entertainment industry, parents, and other adults within local
communities; and
WHEREAS,
youth can be influenced by the counties and cities in which they live using
radio, television, print media, school newsletters, and other means to educate
them about the dangers of underage drinking.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body urge every
municipality and county in the state to take proactive measures to help in the
fight to reduce underage drinking.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Georgia Municipal
Association and the Association County Commissioners of Georgia to be
distributed to every municipality and county in the state.
