A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Bernie Marcus; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, in a move meant to help injured soldiers and send Washington a message, Atlanta businessman Bernie Marcus stepped up to help veterans receive medical care; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Marcus became involved when he learned of a soldier who was treated and improving at the Shepherd Clinic, but faces the loss of funding; and

WHEREAS, the military health care system has been overwhelmed by the number of head injuries, especially from the war in Iraq, where insurgents use roadside bombs to attack troops, causing thousands of troops to suffer mild or moderate head injuries; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Marcus offered to underwrite the costs, care, transportation, and housing of any wounded soldier, sailor, or Marine the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Georgia, approved for treatment; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Marcus hopes to set an example for fellow philanthropists, aiming to bring financial assistance and possibly shame the Pentagon and Congress into covering all medical treatment costs for veterans; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Marcus has named his effort the SHARE Initiative and hopes other donors and medical centers will join his effort; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper for this body to recognize with particularity the outstanding accomplishments of this extraordinary individual.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join together to recognize the outstanding efforts of Mr. Bernie Marcus and commend him for assuring injured veterans receive appropriate medical care.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. Bernie Marcus.
