A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Bill Borden; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the Iditarod Trail, a national historic trail in Alaska, had its beginnings as a
mail and supply route from the coastal towns of Seward and Knik to the interior
mining camps at Flat, Ophir, Ruby, and the west coast communities of Unalakleet,
Golovin, White Mountain, and Nome; and
WHEREAS,
in 1925, the Iditarod Trail became a life saving route for the children of Nome,
Alaska, who were stricken with diphtheria, when the serum to fight the disease
had to be brought by the only means possible: the intrepid dog mushers and their
faithful, hard driving dogs; and
WHEREAS,
82 participants from the United States, Canada, Russia, Norway, Germany,
England, and Switzerland entered the 2002 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, also
known as "The Last Great Race," and only 55 racers finished, one of which
included Kennesaw, Georgia, resident Bill Borden; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Borden is the first Georgian to successfully complete the Iditarod,
finishing on March 17, 2002, in 53rd place with 13 happy, healthy dogs in an
overall time of 14 days, four hours, ten minutes, and 14 seconds, and he crossed
the finish line with all the required mandatory gear, including the 2002
Official Mail Cachet, designed that year by another Georgia resident, Bill's
wife, Brenda Borden; and
WHEREAS,
it is abundantly fitting and proper for this body to recognize with
particularity the outstanding accomplishments of this extraordinary
individual.
NOW
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join
