A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Ed and Linda Levitt; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, every two hours someone in Georgia dies of lung cancer; and

WHEREAS, Ed Levitt was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer four years ago; and

WHEREAS, he could have been a sad statistic, but his positive attitude has kept him from being one; and

WHEREAS, he and his wife of 34 years, Linda, created the Georgia Chapter of the national Lung Cancer Alliance (LCA); and

WHEREAS, they were recently presented with the Hummingbird Award for Perseverance from the Joan Gaeta Lung Cancer Foundation; and

WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Levitt are tireless advocates for raising awareness for lung cancer; and

WHEREAS, the Georgia Chapter of the national Lung Cancer Alliance provides resources for lung cancer patients and raises funds for research; and

WHEREAS, one of the biggest misconceptions regarding lung cancer is that everyone who has the disease is a smoker; and

WHEREAS, only 44 percent of all people with lung cancer have had some history of smoking and 20 to 30 percent are nonsmokers; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Levitt is a retired motivational speaker, and he and Mrs. Levitt have been tireless in their efforts to increase funding for lung cancer research; and
WHEREAS, WellStar Health Systems and St. Joseph's Hospital are developing lung cancer early detection programs; and

WHEREAS, even though Mr. Levitt is not cancer free, he continues to fight for greater funding and awareness for lung cancer research.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize Ed and Linda Levitt for their outstanding efforts in raising awareness for lung cancer and commend Mr. Levitt for his phenomenal positive attitude and his outstanding efforts in this area.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. and Mrs. Ed Levitt.
