A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Carl V. Patton upon the occasion of his retirement from Georgia State University; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Carl V. Patton has served as president of Georgia State University for 16 years, and during his tenure Georgia State has transformed from what was considered a commuter school into a vibrant research university which is home to more than 27,000 students representing every county in the state, every state in the nation, and more than 169 countries; and

WHEREAS, under his leadership, Georgia State launched a university-wide academic strategic planning effort, complemented by a $500 million Main Street Master Plan that produced 12 new or renovated campus facilities; and

WHEREAS, in 2006, President Patton announced the $1 billion updated master plan that will bring to the campus more student housing, a university science park, a professional education center for law and business, and a new humanities building; and

WHEREAS, with each new freshman class, Georgia State University continues to see its best and brightest students who post the highest grade point averages in the university's history; and

WHEREAS, Georgia State University's research dollars have more than tripled during Dr. Patton's presidency; and

WHEREAS, President Patton has fostered a "spirit of innovation" creating a university with limitless potential as a source for individual development and the improvement of society; and

WHEREAS, his focus on recruitment of world-class faculty, strengthened academic programs, and improved campus infrastructure continues to increase recognition for Georgia State University through national rankings, peer journals, and media reports; and

WHEREAS, President Patton has strived to make Georgia State University a part of the city of Atlanta, not apart from it, yet keeping the university campus feel; and

WHEREAS, he has been honored with the "Visionary Award" from the Atlanta Business Chronicle, was inducted into Georgia Trend magazine's 100 Most Influential Georgians Hall of Fame, and received the Dan Sweat Award from Central Atlanta Progress; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Patton has served as a role model for others by his service to community boards, the Georgia Aquarium, Grady Hospital, and other organizations focused on public service.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize President Carl V. Patton on the occasion of his retirement, commend him for his exemplary service to Georgia State University, his community, and this state, and extend their most sincere wishes for health and happiness in the future.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is hereby authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. Carl V. Patton.
