Senate Resolution 1056
By: Senators Mullis of the 53rd, Smith of the 52nd and Thomas of the 54th

A RESOLUTION

Urging the Department of Natural Resources to work in conjunction with the Department of Economic Development to study the feasibility of restoring and preserving historic barns; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, barns in Georgia are witnesses to the role of agriculture in our state´s image and economy and serve as scenic landmarks for residents and visitors alike; and

WHEREAS, historic barns across rural Georgia symbolize important values of heritage, hard work, productivity, and a closeness to the land embraced by the community of people who built them; and

WHEREAS, some of the historic barns in North Georgia are the "See Rock City" barns that have that famous slogan painted on their roofs and are visible for miles around; and

WHEREAS, many historic barns are no longer economically viable because they are subject to damage by decay or demolition or because the land on which the barn stands is sold for nonagricultural use.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body urge the Department of Natural Resources, in conjunction with the Department of Economic Development, to conduct a study of barn restoration and preservation needs in this state and the benefits that a historic barn preservation program could have on tourism and other economic development in rural areas of this state.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Economic Development.
