A RESOLUTION


Recognizing Thursday, February 28, 2008, as the kickoff for the 2008 Legislative Fitness Challenge; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, on Thursday, February 28, 2008, the Georgia Coalition for Physical Activity and Nutrition (GPAN) and the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation will kick off the 2008 Legislative Fitness Challenge on the capitol steps on Washington Street; and

WHEREAS, there are over 6,700 deaths annually caused by obesity related illnesses; and

WHEREAS, Georgia is the 12th "fattest" state in the United States; and

WHEREAS, 1 in 3 middle school students and over 59 percent of adults are overweight or obese; and

WHEREAS, health care costs in this area exceed $2.1 billion annually and continue to rise; and

WHEREAS, 44 percent of students do not meet recommended daily amounts of moderate to vigorous physical activity; and

WHEREAS, 87 percent of schools do not meet the recommended time requirements for physical education classes; and

WHEREAS, 30.1 percent of low-income children in Georgia between the ages of 2 and 5 are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight; and

WHEREAS, only 1 in 5 high school students and only 1 in 4 adults eat the recommended 5 or more servings of fruit and vegetables per day; and

WHEREAS, the 2008 Legislative Fitness Challenge is an effort to improve the overall wellness and awareness of the members of the Georgia General Assembly by having them lead by example as the State of Georgia fights to reverse the obesity and diabetes trend that is so prevalent across the state.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize Thursday, February 28, 2008, as the kickoff for the 2008 Legislative Fitness Challenge and commend GPAN and the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation for their efforts to reduce obesity.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to GPAN and the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation.
