A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Mrs. Stephanie S. Hughley; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Mrs. Stephanie S. Hughley, executive producer of the Atlanta based National Black Arts Festival, was recently honored at Lincoln Center in New York City by the Association of Performing Arts Presenters with the prestigious William Dawson Award for Programmatic Excellence; and

WHEREAS, with the award, the Association of Performing Arts Presenters recognizes the quality, innovation, and vision of program design, audience building, and community efforts of Mrs. Hughley; and

WHEREAS, since Mrs. Hughley took the position of executive producer in 1999, she has been responsible for creating and developing the unique artistic vision of the National Black Arts Festival and managing its day-to-day operations; and

WHEREAS, the mission of the National Black Arts Festival is to engage, cultivate, and educate diverse audiences about the arts and culture of the African Diaspora and to provide opportunities for artistic and creative expression; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Hughley graduated from Kent State University with a Bachelor of Science degree and went on to Antioch College to obtain her Master of Education degree; and

WHEREAS, from 1987 through 1992, she was the founding artistic director of the National Black Arts Festival, and earlier in her career, she was a professional dancer with a number of esteemed companies including the Dance Theater of Boston and the African/Caribbean and Ballet Companies of Boston's National Center of Afro-American Artists; and

WHEREAS, prior to moving to Atlanta, she was the general manager of the Negro Ensemble Company in New York City where she mounted and supervised 12 original productions and four national and international tours; and

WHEREAS, she was the vice president of programming of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center and has worked extensively on Broadway as the company and general manager for a variety of successful productions; and

WHEREAS, she currently serves on the board of the Metro Atlanta Arts and Culture Coalition and the Atlanta Convention Center and Visitors Bureau, is a member of the Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers, and acts as a consultant to a number of performing arts institutions, including the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and the National Music Center in Washington, D.C.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize and commend Mrs. Stephanie S. Hughley for being awarded the William Dawson Award for Programmatic Excellence and for her numerous outstanding accomplishments and contributions to her community and this state.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is hereby authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mrs. Stephanie S. Hughley.
