Senate Resolution 1010

A RESOLUTION


Urging the President and Congress of the United States to call for a peaceful resolution to the current electoral crisis in Kenya and urging support of House Congressional Resolution 283; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, there is currently an electoral crisis in Kenya; and

WHEREAS, the United States can assist with bringing about an end to this crisis through President George W. Bush considering sanctions and supporting diplomatic efforts; and

WHEREAS, Kenya's leading presidential candidates can help by respecting the will of the people; and

WHEREAS, Kenya security forces can assist by refraining from excessive use of force; and

WHEREAS, threats to civil society leaders should be condemned, and media restrictions imposed on Kenya should be lifted; and

WHEREAS, the Kenyan people are to be commended for their commitment to democracy.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that this body does hereby urge the President and Congress of the United States to support House Congressional Resolution 283 which strongly condemns the violence and calls for an end to human rights abuses; for Kenya to rebuild strong democratic institutions, processes and practices; for Kenya to professionalize and modernize its judicial system and promote the rule of law; for Kenya to strengthen its ties to the United States and forge an effective anti-terrorism partnership in Africa; and for Kenyan political leaders on opposite ends to allow mediation to help solve the current political conflict or face potential travel bans and other measures.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Honorable George W. Bush, President of the United States and each member of the Georgia congressional delegation.
