AN ACT
AN ACT
To
amend Title 8 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to buildings
and housing, so as to establish the State Memorials Registry and to provide for
its operation and maintenance; to provide for related matters; to repeal
conflicting laws; and for other purposes.
BE
IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA:
SECTION
1.
Title
8 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to buildings and housing,
is amended by revising Chapter 1, which is reserved, as follows:
"CHAPTER
1
8-1-1.
(a)
There is created the State Memorials Registry which shall be operated and
maintained by the Secretary of State. Such registry shall be for the purpose of
recording and maintaining a list of persons who voluntarily request that no
public building, site, structure, road, highway, street, intersection,
interchange, bridge, or other public property be named for them.
(b)
Any individual may request to the Secretary of State in writing for his or her
name to be placed on the registry and in so doing shall acknowledge that he or
she desires that no public building, site, structure, road, highway, street,
intersection, interchange, bridge, or other public property be named for him or
her.
(c)
Prior to naming any public building, site, structure, road, highway, street,
intersection, interchange, bridge, or other public property for any person, the
jurisdiction seeking to name such public property shall obtain from the
Secretary of State a certification as to whether the name of the person for whom
such public property is sought to be named is on the registry.
(d)
If the name of the person for whom the jurisdiction seeks to name a public
building, site, structure, road, highway, street, intersection, interchange,
bridge, or other public property is listed on the registry, such jurisdiction
shall not name such building, site, structure, road, highway, street,
intersection, interchange, bridge, or other property on behalf of such
person."
SECTION
2.
All
laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are repealed.
