RESOLUTION
Commending
Rockingham Pecans; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the Rockingham Pecans business of Alma, Georgia, was founded by Jackson C.
Carter, who planted the first trees in 1989; and
WHEREAS,
throughout the years, his son and daughter-in-law, James and Bertha Carter, have
planted, irrigated, and cared for about 500 pecan trees, the nuts of which the
Carters sold in-the-shell by bulk to a wholesale pecan business;
and
WHEREAS,
realizing that more revenue could be gained by shelling out the pecans, they
purchased the necessary equipment to begin this process; and
WHEREAS,
following the specifications of the Georgia Department of Agriculture, a new
cracking and shelling room and a separate kitchen were added to the present
facility, and the entrepreneurs have broadened their business to include not
only shelled out pecans but also a variety of candies, pies, and flavored
pecans; and
WHEREAS,
after assistance from the Bacon County Extension Office, they were encouraged to
pursue the aid of the University of Georgia Food Science Department in acquiring
nutritional statements, making their products ready to be dispensed on the
retail market; and
WHEREAS,
the Carters entered the first annual Flavor of Georgia Food Contest with their
Rockingham Fried Pecans and made it to the finals on Tuesday, March 20,
2007.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend Rockingham Pecans for its hard work and dedication in
providing delicious pecans and other foods to the citizens of
Georgia.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Rockingham
Pecans.
