A RESOLUTION


Honoring and remembering the life of Judge Clarence Roland Vaughn, Jr.; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Judge Clarence Roland Vaughn, Jr., a lifelong resident of Rockdale County, died at his home in Conyers, on Monday, March 26, 2007; and

WHEREAS, in June 1942, after graduating from North Georgia College, he married the late Doris Henson Vaughn; and

WHEREAS, he entered the armed forces as a Second Lieutenant and was promoted to the rank of Captain, serving four years during World War II, including 26 months overseas in the European Theater, 6th Cavalry, 3rd Army under the command of General George Patton, where he received the bronze star for meritorious service; and

WHEREAS, upon his return, he graduated from the University of Georgia Law School, passed the State Bar, and began practice with his father, Clarence R. Vaughn, Sr.; and

WHEREAS, he served as a State Senator for one term in 1959, and in 1960, he was elected to the House of Representatives and served for 22 years. During his terms as Representative, he was Floor Leader for the Governor, and served as Majority Leader from 1974-1982; and

WHEREAS, Judge Vaughn was elected the first Superior Court Judge of the newly formed Rockdale Judicial Circuit and began service on January 1, 1982, and served the circuit as Chief Judge; and

WHEREAS, Judge Vaughn was a lifelong member of the Conyers First United Methodist Church, where he served on the Board and as Superintendent of Sunday School for 18 years; and
WHEREAS, he was Chairman of Trustees for Salem Camp Ground and was a trustee and chairman of the Vaughn-Jordon Foundation, a member of the Rotary Club, VFW, American Legion, and a 32nd degree Mason. He will be remembered for his generous gifts to the community, including the Conyers Rockdale Council for the Arts, The Rockdale County Historical Society, and the Rockdale Medical Center; and

WHEREAS, in addition to his love of his family, law, and community, Judge Vaughn was known for his love of flowers, particularly the orchids he nurtured in his greenhouses; and

WHEREAS, he is survived by sons, Alvin H. Vaughn and C. Roland Vaughn III; daughters-in-law, Paula Vaughn and Susan Vaughn; niece, Harriet R. Powell; and devoted friend, Barbara Englehardt. Other survivors include grandchildren, Alvin and his wife Robin, Julia, Rebekah, Michael, and Clare Vaughn; and great-grandchildren, Keagan Stone, Jackson Vaughn, and Jake Vaughn.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join in honoring the life of Judge Clarence Roland Vaughn, Jr., and remembering all his many outstanding contributions to Georgia.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Judge Clarence Roland Vaughn, Jr.
