A RESOLUTION


Recognizing Hyatt Regency Atlanta and congratulating it on its 40th anniversary celebration; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Hyatt Regency Atlanta suffered nearly universal ridicule upon its construction in 1967 when architect John Portman, ignoring standard "form follows function" guidelines of the day, designed a hotel atrium lobby patterned after the atrium concept of ancient Roman times, making it the first contemporary atrium hotel in the world; and

WHEREAS, the concept of an atrium lobby began a revolution in the design of hotels, placing Hyatt Regency Atlanta in the forefront of the luxury hotel industry; and

WHEREAS, the hotel opened on May 1, 1967, and towered 22 stories high to be the tallest building in downtown Atlanta, and in less than three months, it had a 94.6 percent occupancy rate; and

WHEREAS, the hotel holds the honorable distinction of being the first major downtown hotel to welcome the African American community as guests in Atlanta; and

WHEREAS, Hyatt Regency Atlanta and the African American community are linked by shared history and community connections that gave birth to the Heritage Celebration in 2003 which honored and celebrated their rich history and recognized the many dedicated 30 year plus employees and loyal clients; and

WHEREAS, the hotel is known for its exceptional corporate citizenship and long-standing community engagement; and

WHEREAS, Hyatt Regency Atlanta established a tradition of recognizing and supporting the city´s firefighters, and the Hyatt family serves holiday dinner with all the trimmings to the firefighters on duty in the six downtown fire stations on December 25th; and
WHEREAS, Hyatt Regency Atlanta also teamed up with 4-H and Habitat for Humanity to build a home for a family in need last year; and

WHEREAS, today the 1,260 room hotel is one of the nation´s premier convention and trade show facilities with 180,000 square feet of ballroom, exhibit, and meeting and hospitality space; and

WHEREAS, in conjunction with the hotel´s 40th anniversary, Hyatt Regency Atlanta will complete its $8 million guest room renovation of the former Ivy Tower in March; and

WHEREAS, the 200 guest rooms have been transformed into classic modern accomodations, appealing to convention, leisure, and business travelers alike; and

WHEREAS, May 1, 2007, forty years later, the landmark hotel and its parent company, Hyatt Hotels and Resorts, are recognized as architectural innovators, and they will celebrate and reconfirm their commitment to Atlanta and Georgia as strong economic contributors and good corporate citizens.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize Hyatt Regency Atlanta´s contribution to the City of Atlanta and the State of Georgia and congratulate it on its 40th anniversary celebration.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Hyatt Regency Atlanta.
