A RESOLUTION


Commending the Clayton State University Lady Lakers basketball team and inviting them to appear before the House of Representatives; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the 2007 Clayton State University Lady Lakers basketball team has established a standard of athletic excellence with equal emphases on character and academics; and

WHEREAS, this superlative team completed a whirlwind season, ending with the best record in school history concluding with an astonishing 29-6 record, earning its first trip ever to the NCAA Women's Division II Final Four; and

WHEREAS, the road to the Final Four was long and difficult, but the Lady Lakers are the 2007 Peach Belt Conference Champions; 2007 Peach Belt Tournament Champions; and 2007 South Atlantic Regional Champions, and the team earned an appearance at the NCAA Division II Elite 8 tournament in Kearney, Nebraska; and

WHEREAS, the 2007 Clayton State University Lady Lakers included the following outstanding athletes: Kim Lloyd, Sharon Wiles, Tamara Layton, Marie St. Fort, Basia Bukowska, Roberta Phillips, Crystal Brown, Shantel Ragin, Lynette Jackson, Nikkisha Pritchett, Alecia Humphrey, and Tracey Browne; and

WHEREAS, the phenomenal performance of the team is a clear indication of the outstanding athletic ability, the dedication and hard work, and the unity of purpose and spirit of each member; their superb offensive and defensive talents; the astute direction of Head Coach Dennis Cox and Assistant Coaches Shannon Reid, Kaleena Coleman, and Carlie Anderson; and the sustained support of University President Dr. Thomas K. Harden and Athletic Director Mason Barfield; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Lakers have brought honor to Clayton State University, Clayton County, the City of Morrow, and the State of Georgia by playing with inspiring determination throughout this season and giving a spectacular performance in the NCAA Women's Division II Final Four; and

WHEREAS, as this magnificent team earned its well-deserved reputation for excellence by performing with courage and precision over months of pain and hard work, it is abundantly proper to call them champions.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize the Clayton State University Lady Lakers basketball team for its unparalleled determination, tenacity, and character; commend Coach Dennis Cox on his third season of dedicated coaching at Clayton State University; and extend their sincerest best wishes for continued success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the players and coaches of the Clayton State University Lady Lakers basketball team are hereby invited to appear before the House of Representatives at a date and time to be fixed by the Speaker of the House for the purposes of being recognized by the House and receiving an appropriate copy of this resolution.
