A RESOLUTION

Recognizing and commending the Dahlonega Gold Museum; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, twenty years before the famed 1849 gold rush in California, the true beginning of our country's first gold rush began in north Georgia; and

WHEREAS, this gold rush is symbolized in the bricks cast from gold-enriched Cane Creek that were used in the building of the Lumpkin County Courthouse, now the site of the Dahlonega Gold Museum and one of the oldest courthouses still standing in the United States; and

WHEREAS, the Dahlonega Gold Museum has continued its efforts to offer hundreds of programs to thousands of school children annually and to involve the local community in celebrating history; and

WHEREAS, the Dahlonega Gold Museum developed a preservation plan that was recognized and funded by the Department of Natural Resources to improve and stabilize the historic structures, serve local schools in their educational efforts, improve documentation, and improve exhibits; and

WHEREAS, the Dahlonega Gold Museum is one of only two state historic sites to receive funding from the Department of Natural Resources; and

WHEREAS, all the accomplishments of the Dahlonega Gold Museum would not have been possible if it had not been for the hard-working and dedicated staff working alongside their volunteers, the Friends of the Gold Museum, and the local community; and

WHEREAS, the Department of Natural Resources has awarded the Dahlonega Gold Museum, in a competition with 15 historic sites and 48 state parks, with the Best Year-Round Historic Site Programming Award for 2006 for its commitment to preservation, interpretation, and community involvement.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize the Dahlonega Gold Museum for their outstanding service to the State of Georgia and the United States, commend their dedication to excellence in museum programming and historic preservation, and express sincere appreciation for their efforts.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to the Dahlonega Gold Museum.
