RESOLUTION
Honoring
and remembering the life of Dewey N. Hayes, Sr.; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia lost one of its most distinguished citizens with the
passing of attorney Dewey N. Hayes, Sr., on March 4, 2007; and
WHEREAS,
he was born on July 27, 1923, to John Cleveland and Mary Walsh Hayes in Coffee
County, where he was a long-time servant of the community of Douglas;
and
WHEREAS,
he served his country nobly in the United States Army from 1942 to 1946, during
World War II; and
WHEREAS,
he was a celebrated graduate of South Georgia College, the Walter F. George
School of Law at Mercer University, and the University of Chicago;
and
WHEREAS,
he served the citizens of Georgia with diligence, grace, and wisdom as a
district attorney from 1957 to 1981, and he is credited with shutting down
nearly every illegal business in the Bacon County area during the first three
years of his tenure; and
WHEREAS,
he unhesitatingly aided his community in every way he could, serving as
president of the Douglas Bar Association for approximately ten years, president
of the District Attorneys Association of Georgia, and a 50 year member of the
Georgia Bar Association; and
WHEREAS,
his selfless dedication to his community was surpassed only by his unshakable
devotion to his family, and he is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Haley
Hayes; daughter, Candy Hayes Powell; sons, Dewey Hayes, Jr. and Franklin Hayes;
brother, George P. Hayes; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a host of
relatives, colleagues, and friends; and
WHEREAS,
in life he commanded the esteem of his fellow Georgians; at his death we mingle
our sympathies with the grief of his family and friends.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join together to express their deepest regret at the passing of Dewey
N. Hayes, Sr. and extend their most sincere condolences to his
family.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of
Dewey N. Hayes, Sr.
