RESOLUTION
Celebrating
the life of Willie Howard McBride; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Willie Howard McBride, born December 8, 1925, in the small town of Camilla,
Georgia, was the youngest child of the late Emanuel and Artie Belle McBride;
and
WHEREAS,
he was born into a Christian home, and during his early childhood, he attended
the Church of God in Christ and Union Baptist Church of Camilla, which he later
joined; and
WHEREAS,
from elementary through high school he was an honor roll student, graduating
valedictorian of his class, and after finishing high school, he attended N.Y.A.
School in Jesup, Georgia, completing a course that qualified him as a certified
machinist with a guaranteed deferment against the draft; however, he opted to
attend college in September and was drafted into the navy in February of the
following year; and
WHEREAS,
during his navy career, he was stationed on the troop transport ship, USS
General S.D.
Sturgis, which was the third ship to dock
at Yokohama, Japan, three days before the treaty of surrender was signed; and
WHEREAS,
Willie returned to Savannah State College in 1946, graduating with a B.S. in
Social Science in 1949, and he later he earned an M.A. in Education
Administration; and
WHEREAS,
he served 38 years in the Georgia Public School System in a variety of
positions; and
WHEREAS,
he served as president of the Georgia Council of Mathematics Teachers of Georgia
Teachers Education Association (GTEA) Region 10; director of GTEA; local unit
president, Clarke County Unit of GTEA; mathematics consultant for the Georgia
State Department of Education; was named Teacher of the Year; and was a
consultant on eight Southern Association evaluations of elementary, middle,
junior, and high schools; and
WHEREAS, he was a member of the Breakfast Optimist Club of Athens; lifetime member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Athens Alumni Chapter; lifetime member of Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity, University of Georgia Chapter; member of the Men´s Civic Club of Athens; president of Savannah State College Alumni Chapter (local and national); member of the Atlanta University Alumni Chapter (local and national); lifetime member of the Georgia Retired Educators Association; lifetime member of the NAACP; past president and current parliamentarian of Athens Area Retired Educators; leadership training officer, Northeast Council Boy Scouts of America; and sports referee (30 years) for G.H.S.A and G.I.A.; and
WHEREAS, he was a member of the Breakfast Optimist Club of Athens; lifetime member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Athens Alumni Chapter; lifetime member of Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity, University of Georgia Chapter; member of the Men´s Civic Club of Athens; president of Savannah State College Alumni Chapter (local and national); member of the Atlanta University Alumni Chapter (local and national); lifetime member of the Georgia Retired Educators Association; lifetime member of the NAACP; past president and current parliamentarian of Athens Area Retired Educators; leadership training officer, Northeast Council Boy Scouts of America; and sports referee (30 years) for G.H.S.A and G.I.A.; and
WHEREAS,
one of his greatest pleasures was working as a member of Ebenezer Baptist
Church, West, where he served on the Trustee Board, as chairman of the Board of
Deacons, and in many other capacities; and
WHEREAS,
he leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted wife of 53 years, Frances
Eberhardt McBride; a son, Reginald V. McBride; a daughter-in-law, Dr. Donna
McBride of Stockbridge, Georgia; two grandchildren, Reginald McBride II and
Adonna McBride; two sisters-in-law, Rosa Lee Childs of Columbus, Georgia, and
Matilda Simpson of Atlantic City, New Jersey; and a host of nieces, nephews,
cousins, and friends.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body celebrate the life well lived of Willie Howard McBride and offer their
condolences to his family and friends upon his passing.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of
Willie Howard McBride.
