A RESOLUTION


Honoring the Georgia State Patrol on its 70th anniversary; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the Department of Public Safety will be 70 years old today; and

WHEREAS, legislation creating the department and the Georgia State Patrol was signed on March 19, 1937, and became effective immediately upon the signature of then Governor E.D. Rivers; and

WHEREAS, the first Georgia State Patrol troopers graduated training in August of 1937 and were on patrol by September of that year; and

WHEREAS, the Department of Public Safety has been the foundation from which several separate state agencies have been created through the years, including the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Department of Driver Services, GBI Crime Lab, Peace Officers Standards and Training Council (POST), Governor's Office of Highway Safety, Georgia Police Academy, and Georgia Crime Information Center; and

WHEREAS, the men and women of the Georgia State Patrol put their lives on the line while performing their daily duties, and 26 troopers and agents of the Department of Public Safety have been killed in the line of duty; and

WHEREAS, the citizens of the State of Georgia are proud of the Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety, Colonel Bill Hitchens, and our state law enforcement personnel who serve our state with honor, loyalty, dedication, accomplishment, and sacrifice; and

WHEREAS, the troopers have contributed to the success of the Georgia State Patrol, and it is fitting and proper that the House of Representatives honor this agency and the men and women who so honorably serve the State of Georgia.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body honor the Georgia State Patrol and commend and congratulate each and every member of the agency upon the occasion of its 70th anniversary.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Georgia State Patrol.
