A RESOLUTION


Urging the United States Department of Justice to oppose the proposed unsolicited takeover of Delta Air Lines; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Delta Air Lines became an air passenger airline in 1928 and inaugurated service to four cities in 1929; and

WHEREAS, Delta moved its worldwide headquarters to Atlanta, Georgia, in 1941 and became the largest private employer serving Atlanta and Georgia; and

WHEREAS, Delta´s headquarters and primary hub in Atlanta contribute more than $14 billion annually to Georgia´s economy; and

WHEREAS, Delta has always stood for safe and reliable air transportation, distinctive customer service, and hospitality from the heart; and

WHEREAS, on September 14, 2005, Delta took a necessary and responsible step to secure its future by voluntarily filing to reorganize under Chapter 11 of the U. S. Bankruptcy Code; and

WHEREAS, Delta and its employees have worked hard and made many sacrifices to regain an industry position of strength and leadership; and

WHEREAS, Delta´s tradition and commitment to Georgia's civic, cultural, and charitable causes, both in financial terms and volunteerism, have remained steadfast despite the challenges of bankruptcy; and

WHEREAS, Delta is on track to exit bankruptcy in the first half of 2007 as an independent, stand-alone company.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that it is in the best interests of the citizens of Georgia and the employees of Delta Air Lines, as well as the economic welfare of the entire region, for Delta to emerge from bankruptcy as a stand-alone, independent company, and the members of this body stand in opposition to any unsolicited takeover or merger attempt from anyone that may diminish the importance of Delta as a major employer and corporate headquarters in Georgia.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Attorney General of the United States and Delta Air Lines.
