By: Representatives Dickson of the 6th, Casas of the 103rd, and Maxwell of the 17th

A RESOLUTION

Encouraging the Department of Education and the State Board of Education to periodically review its reporting requirements; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of Georgia adopted House Resolution 410 in its 2006 session, creating the House Study Committee on Reporting Requirements for Local School Systems; and

WHEREAS, the purpose of the study committee was to review the reporting requirements of local school systems and to determine whether such reports are necessary to the goals of public education or whether such reports are obsolete and unnecessary; and

WHEREAS, in the course of hearing testimony from stakeholders and studying the pertinent issues, the committee learned that, in addition to reports required pursuant to state law, there are also reports required of local school systems by the Department of Education and the State Board of Education pursuant to rules and regulations; and

WHEREAS, the committee has taken action to address the obsolete and unnecessary reporting requirements that are contained in statute; and

WHEREAS, it was recommended to the committee that it would be prudent and advisable for there to be a periodic review of the reporting requirements of the Department of Education and the State Board of Education in order to identify any obsolete or unnecessary reports required by rule.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the Department of Education and the State Board of Education are strongly encouraged to conduct a self-audit every two years for the purpose of reviewing their reporting requirements to identify any obsolete or unnecessary reports required by rule and that the State Board of Education is encouraged to establish a committee to accomplish such review.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to the Department of Education and the State Board of Education.
