A RESOLUTION


Expressing regret at the passing of Ray Beck; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, on January 9, 2007, the State of Georgia lost one of its finest and most distinguished citizens with the passing of Ray Beck; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Beck was born on March 17, 1931, in Bowdon, Georgia, and grew up in Cedartown, where he began his remarkable football career as a star at Cedartown High; and

WHEREAS, he went on to play for four years as a guard for legendary coach Bobby Dodd at Georgia Tech and was named an All-American in 1951; and

WHEREAS, during his senior year, he demonstrated an uncommon talent for leadership and was instrumental in transforming Georgia Tech from a 5-6 team to an 11-0-1 team in a season that included a 17-14 victory over Baylor in the Orange Bowl; and

WHEREAS, after finishing his career at Georgia Tech, he was drafted by the New York Giants in 1952 and was a member of the Giants' 1956 World Championship team that defeated the Chicago Bears by 49 points; and

WHEREAS, he is an inductee of the Georgia Tech Hall of Fame and the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in which he also served as a director and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1997; and

WHEREAS, he returned to his beloved home in Cedartown as an active community leader, participating in organizations such as the Cedartown Chamber of Commerce, the Cedartown Development Authority, Polk General Hospital, the Advisory Board of Polk Medical Center, the First National Bank of Cedartown, and the Georgia Motor Trucking Association; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Beck honorably served his country as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army; and

WHEREAS, an inspirational community leader, an outstanding athlete, and a devoted family man who in life commanded the esteem of his fellow Georgians, in his death we mingle our sympathies with the grief of his family and friends.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body express their deepest and most sincere regret at the passing of Ray Beck.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Ray Beck.
