A
RESOLUTION
Urging
the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia and its member
institutions to establish programs for intercollegiate wrestling; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
competitive wrestling is one of the most difficult sports to master and requires
strength, agility, stamina, physical conditioning, self-discipline, technical
proficiency, and strategy and adaptation; and
WHEREAS,
Georgia is blessed with a number of outstanding high school wrestling programs
which produce extraordinarily talented young wrestlers; and
WHEREAS,
many of these young wrestlers desire to continue competing at the collegiate
level and seek scholarship opportunities to continue participating in their
sport; and
WHEREAS,
none of the 35 member institutions of the University System of Georgia offers
competitive intercollegiate wrestling at the present time; and
WHEREAS,
the lack of opportunity for competition in intercollegiate wrestling and the
lack of scholarship opportunities result in talented student-athletes leaving
the State of Georgia to pursue their sport in colleges and universities in other
states.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body urge the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia and its
member institutions to establish programs for intercollegiate wrestling to
prevent the further loss of talented student-athletes from Georgia.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Board of
Regents.
