RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss and inviting him to appear before
the House of Representatives; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Saxby Chambliss was born in Warrenton, North Carolina, on November 10, 1943,
and spent most of his early life living in the Southern United States,
graduating from C.E. Byrd High School in Shreveport, Louisiana, in 1960, earning
a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the University of Georgia in
1966, and receiving his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Tennessee
College of Law in 1968; and
WHEREAS,
he was first elected to the United States Congress in 1994 to represent
Georgia's 8th Congressional District, and throughout his legislative career, he
has been honored with numerous awards from both the private and public sector
for his work in the fields of agriculture, defense, budget, and national
security; and
WHEREAS,
as an attorney, he specialized in representing farmers' legal interests in South
Georgia, and during his four terms in the House, he was instrumental in drafting
two farm bills and reforming the federal crop insurance program through his
chairmanship of the Agriculture Subcommittee on General Farm Commodities and
Risk Management; and
WHEREAS,
On November 5, 2002, Saxby Chambliss was elected Georgia's 63rd United States
Senator in what was one of the most stunning victories of the 2002 elections;
and
WHEREAS,
Senator Chambliss has emerged as a leader and gained a reputation as an expert
on defense, intelligence, and agricultural issues, serving as a member of the
Senate Armed Services Committee, the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence,
and the Senate Rules Committee, and he is the ranking Republican on the Senate
Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry; and
WHEREAS,
in January 2005, Senator Chambliss was unanimously elected by his Republican
colleagues to serve as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, and
on his first day as chairman, he delivered the committee's unanimous approval of
the new Secretary of Agriculture and swiftly moved forward with a series of
hearings in step with the developing concerns in livestock, school nutrition,
grains and futures markets, food safety and biotechnology's future for
agriculture; and
WHEREAS,
following in the footsteps of former Senators Richard B. Russell, Jr., and Sam
Nunn, Senator Chambliss is a strong voice for Georgia's defense industry and the
military community, and as a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, he
continues Georgia's longstanding tradition of leadership and advocacy for the
state's military installations; and
WHEREAS,
to ensure our troops on the ground have access to the most timely and accurate
intelligence, Senator Chambliss has worked steadfastly on the Senate Select
Committee on Intelligence, advocating dramatic improvements to the U.S.
intelligence community's information sharing and human intelligence gathering
abilities; and
WHEREAS,
In May of 2006, Senator Chambliss was honored with the CIA Director's Award by
the Director of Central Intelligence, receiving the agency's highest award in
honor of his extraordinary fidelity and exceptional service to the CIA;
and
WHEREAS,
Senator Chambliss currently resides with his loving wife of more than 40 years,
Julianne, in Moultrie, Georgia, and they have two children and two
grandchildren.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body recognize U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss for his outstanding
achievements as a U.S. Congressman and commend him for his unshakable loyalty to
the State of Georgia.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss is hereby invited to
appear before the House of Representatives at a date and time to be fixed by the
Speaker of the House for the purposes of being recognized by the House and
receiving an appropriate copy of this resolution.
