RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and honoring David M. Dupree; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
David M. Dupree is an honest and dedicated man who strove for excellence in all
his endeavors as evidenced dramatically by his many years of superlative service
as an outstanding teacher, coach, and life member of the Kappa Alpha Psi
Fraternity, Inc.; and
WHEREAS,
he was born on September 10, 1924, in Clemson, South Carolina, and he earned a
Bachelor of Science degree from Johnson C. Smith University, a Master of Arts
from New York University, an Honorary Doctor of Laws from Paine College and
pursued additional studies at Benedict College and Wayne State University;
and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Dupree began his teaching career as a biology teacher and a basketball and
football coach at Bell Street High School in Clinton, South Carolina, and one
year later he was offered a job as biology teacher and head coach in Augusta,
Georgia, at A. R. Johnson High School and eventually became head football coach
at Lucy Laney High School; and
WHEREAS,
during his football coaching career at Lucy Laney and Bell Street High Schools,
he amassed 210 wins, 12 ties, and 79 losses, and, in addition to his leading the
teams to state championships, in 1966, Lucy Laney High School led the nation in
football scoring, averaging 54.5 points per game; and
WHEREAS,
in addition to his illustrious football program, he also coached an outstanding
track team from 1949 until 1984; and
WHEREAS,
after spending 35 years as a teacher and head coach at Lucy Laney High School,
he retired from the Augusta public school system, going on to be the head track
and cross country coach at Paine College, working there for 14 years;
and
WHEREAS,
he became very involved with Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., being a lifetime
member and founder of the Augusta chapter and acting as a mentor for many of
Augusta's youth, grooming them to be leaders in the future; and
WHEREAS,
he is a devoted family man to his wife, Vivian Key Dupree, two daughters,
grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and a dedicated member of his community,
actively involved in the Tabernacle Baptist Church where he is a former choir
member, Sunday school superintendent, and trustee; and
WHEREAS,
he is a classic gentleman and a person of magnanimous strengths with an
unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness;
and
WHEREAS,
his unparalleled organizational and leadership talents, his remarkable patience
and diplomacy, his keen sense of vision, and his acute sensitivity to the needs
of the citizens of his community and state have earned him the respect and
admiration of his colleagues and associates.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join together to recognize and honor the outstanding contributions of
David M. Dupree and express their sincere best wishes for the
future.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to David M.
Dupree.
