RESOLUTION
Recognizing
March 29, 2008, from 8:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M., as "Earth Hour"; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
"Earth Hour" falls on March 29, 2008, and its purpose is to raise awareness of
climate change and demonstrate that, by working together, individuals can make a
positive impact in the fight for global environmental issues; and
WHEREAS,
the citizens of Georgia have always striven to be environmentally responsible
throughout Georgia and around the globe; and
WHEREAS,
many groups and individuals have worked tirelessly to promote environmental
responsibility and the preservation of Georgia's natural resources;
and
WHEREAS,
the citizens of Georgia will again show leadership as a beacon of action and
environmental responsibility through participating in World Wildlife Fund's
"Earth Hour 2008" by voluntarily turning off their nonessential lights for one
hour, from 8:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M., on Saturday, March 29, 2008;
and
WHEREAS,
participants in "Earth Hour 2008" in the State of Georgia will join millions of
people around the world in a bold statement on climate change; and
WHEREAS,
in connection with "Earth Hour," all participants are encouraged to replace
older light bulbs with highly efficient, compact fluorescent bulbs and to pledge
to take actions to reduce their energy consumption on a daily basis; and
WHEREAS,
corporate partners in "Earth Hour" will not only pledge to turn off all
nonessential lights but will also identify ways to reduce energy usage, while
broadly communicating their commitment, and
WHEREAS,
in order to commend environmental responsibility, the state will recognize from
8:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. on March 29, 2008, as "Earth Hour."
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that this body
recognizes March 29, 2008, from 8:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M., as "Earth Hour" and
commends and congratulates all participants in Georgia who strive to be
environmentally responsible and work to conserve Georgia's natural resources.
