A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and congratulating Coosa High School on its 80th anniversary and inviting
Principal Sam Sprewell, staff, and students to appear before the House of
Representatives; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Fairview School, built in 1922, combined with the local Lavender, Rice, and
Prospect schools in 1927 to create a new consolidated school, the Coosa School,
named in honor of the Coosa River and the Native American tribe, the Coosa;
and
WHEREAS,
the school burned twice, once in 1933 and again in 1945, and being unable to
fund another construction project, the community voted and approved a bond issue
to finance the building of a third Coosa School; and
WHEREAS,
Floyd County Schools opened a new school on a larger piece of land across the
highway from Coosa School's original location in 1946; however, the 1950's and
1960's brought industrial growth to Floyd County's Coosa Valley, and the
population burgeoned, creating a demand for a new, larger school with expanded
facilities; and
WHEREAS,
in anticipation of a new facility, the Floyd County Board of Education purchased
35 acres approximately two miles east of Coosa High School, and in 1971, the
community opened the doors to a new school building that included more than 40
academic classrooms, multiple laboratories, a media center, an auditorium, a
cafeteria, an instrumental music room, an administrative office suite, and a
football field; and
WHEREAS,
the students and faculty of Coosa High School have won numerous academic and
sports accolades over its 80 year history, including its first state
championship in baseball in 1960, its first football state championship in 1961,
a second football championship in 1969 at its newly constructed stadium, and
Mike Glenn, a member of Coosa High School's 1973 basketball team, became an NBA
player for the Atlanta Hawks and later a television sports commentator for ESPN;
and
WHEREAS, more recently, Coosa High School has been recognized for its academic success, being named a 2003 Georgia School of Excellence, receiving the Class AA Governor's Cup Challenge Award for SAT Excellence in 2004 and 2006, being named the 2007 Region 7 Class AA SAT Champion in recognition of SAT scores above the national average, and being named an Advanced Placement Honor School for 2007-2008 by the College Board of Princeton; and
WHEREAS, more recently, Coosa High School has been recognized for its academic success, being named a 2003 Georgia School of Excellence, receiving the Class AA Governor's Cup Challenge Award for SAT Excellence in 2004 and 2006, being named the 2007 Region 7 Class AA SAT Champion in recognition of SAT scores above the national average, and being named an Advanced Placement Honor School for 2007-2008 by the College Board of Princeton; and
WHEREAS,
the school's Academic Decathlon Team is on a winning streak, garnering six
consecutive local Academic Decathlon titles from 2002 to 2008 and advancing to
compete on High
Q, a televised quiz show on WSB-TV Channel
2 in Atlanta; and
WHEREAS,
in 2005, the Georgia Department of Education recognized Coosa High School's
departments of business and engineering and technology for meeting specific
state and national standards, and in 2000, the International Technology
Education Association named Coosa High School's technology education department
a Program of Excellence, one of only 39 programs in the nation; and
WHEREAS,
the school's dynamic faculty includes former Harvard students, Fulbright
Scholars, published authors, and Hall of Fame coaches, and over 50 percent of
the faculty holds advanced degrees; and
WHEREAS,
on May 24, 2008, Coosa High School will graduate its 80th class of scholars and
champions, and the faculty and staff, along with the Floyd County Board of
Education, will continue to educate future students in Coosa High School's
tradition of excellence, a tradition that began with a small community school on
the banks of the mighty Coosa River.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join together in recognizing Coosa High School, its faculty, and its
students, past and present, for their many outstanding accomplishments and for
the value they have added to their community and this state; congratulate them
on their 80th anniversary; and invite them to appear before this body at a date
and time designated by the Speaker of the House of Representatives for the
purposes of being recognized by the House of Representatives and receiving an
appropriate copy of this resolution.
