A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and honoring the life of Mrs. Phyllis Lynn Wright-Davis; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Mrs. Phyllis Lynn Wright-Davis was born in Centre, Alabama to Joe and Dorothy Wright on January 1, 1958, the first child born into the new year in Cherokee County, Alabama; and

WHEREAS, she was raised in Rome, Georgia and graduated with honors and other distinction from East Rome High School, and went on to obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree from Spelman College and an Associate of Science degree from Gupton Jones College of Funeral Services in Atlanta, Georgia; and

WHEREAS, she returned to Rome, Georgia in the 1980's to work at, and later manage, her family's business, Wright's Memorial Mortuary; and

WHEREAS, she was very active in her community serving with the United Way, the South Rome Redevelopment Corporation, the City of Rome's Tourism Committee, the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, the Heart of the Community Foundation, and as a Certified Facilitator for Nurturing Parenting God's Way; and

WHEREAS, she was a graduate of Leadership Rome, received the National NAACP Youth Advisor Award of the Year for four consecutive years for her work with the NAACP Rome/Floyd Youth Council, the group receiving state and national acclaim under her leadership, and she was the state advisor for the NAACP's Georgia Youth and College Division from 1997 through 1998; and

WHEREAS, she served as Secretary of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission, helping to organize the Commission's four-day celebration in honor of Dr. King's birthday, which is one of the largest King Day celebrations in the State; and
WHEREAS, she was a volunteer mentor for Annie K. Davis Elementary School, organized and volunteered her time at the yearly Love Feast, which provides hot dinners to the needy of Rome and surrounding communities during Thanksgiving, a member of the Rome Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., a faithful member of Thankful Baptist Church, and she and her husband were mentors to Club Hero participants in a drug prevention program for teenagers; and

WHEREAS, she was a loving wife to Ralph Davis, mother to Brian and Phillip Davis, and grandmother to Jaden and Brianne Davis.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join together in recognizing and honoring the life of Mrs. Phyllis Lynn Wright-Davis and send their most sincere condolences to her family and friends.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mrs. Phyllis Lynn Wright-Davis.
