RESOLUTION
Recognizing
the J. Phil Campbell, Senior, Natural Resource Conservation Center and urging
the United States Congress to reject plans to close the center; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the J. Phil Campbell, Senior, Natural Resource Conservation Center located in
Watkinsville, Georgia, has a rich history of providing valuable research support
to farmers in the southeastern United States; and
WHEREAS,
the center's mission is to apply state of the art understanding to develop
efficient, economical, and socially acceptable agro-ecosystems; and
WHEREAS,
research scientists carry out this mission in partnership with farmers, leaders
of soil and water conservation districts, and state and federal regulatory
agencies; and
WHEREAS,
these agricultural professionals actively pursue the goal of transferring
successful agricultural systems to land owners and managers to protect and
sustain the natural resource base, build accord with nonagricultural sectors,
and support healthy rural economies; and
WHEREAS,
research field days conducted at the center provide opportunities for Georgia
farmers to acquire research based knowledge in a valuable, hands-on environment;
and
WHEREAS,
the unique benefits produced from the Campbell Center are in significant
jeopardy due to fiscal year 2009 budget cuts proposed by the administration of
President George W. Bush.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body urge the United States Congress to reject plans to close the J. Phil
Campbell, Senior, Natural Resource Conservation Center and urge members of the
Georgia Congressional Delegation to take all necessary steps to maintain a
viable research program at the center for the ultimate benefit of farmers in the
southeastern United States.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the United
States Secretary of Agriculture and all members of the Georgia Congressional
Delegation.
