House Resolution 1483
By: Representatives Reese of the 98th, Rice of the 51st, Casas of the 103rd, Floyd of the 99th, Sheldon of the 105th, and others

A RESOLUTION

Urging the Sheriff of Gwinnett County and the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners to join together to find funding and create a plan for sending the members of the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department to the federal 287(g) training program to allow said members to be trained to deal with illegal immigration; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates that every year more than 1.5 million illegal aliens enter this country and that approximately 500,000 settle in the United States, promoting a culture of disrespect for U.S. immigration laws and the basic principles of this great nation; and

WHEREAS, lawful immigration into the United States and the State of Georgia is one of the strong foundations of our great nation and state, and the continuing flow of legal immigrants into the United States and Georgia is vital to our economic security; and

WHEREAS, a nation that values and depends upon immigration should have rational and humane immigration laws that serve the American economy and reflect the American dream, as well as address the threat to the security and economy of this nation presented by the estimated ten million undocumented aliens currently living in the United States; and

WHEREAS, the illegal immigration problem profoundly affects America's security, the welfare of its citizens, and its future with potentially devastating results.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join with the Gwinnett County Delegation in urging, at the insistence of its constituency, Gwinnett County Sheriff Butch Conway and the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners to find funding and create a plan for sending the members of the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department to the federal 287(g) training program, thereby allowing them to be trained to handle immigration issues facing Gwinnett County.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners and Gwinnett County Sheriff Butch Conway.
