A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending The Family Y of Metropolitan Augusta; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the Augusta YMCA began in 1858 and is celebrating its sesquicentennial anniversary in 2008; and

WHEREAS, the Augusta YWCA began in 1909 and will celebrate its centennial anniversary in 2009; and

WHEREAS, the two organizations legally merged in 1997, creating The Family Y of Metropolitan Augusta; and

WHEREAS, The Family Y has a 150-year-legacy of service in the Augusta area and has touched countless lives through its work; and

WHEREAS, The Family Y serves individuals and families in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) through programs designed to build healthy spirit, mind and body, reflecting the values of the Judeo-Christian tradition while maintaining respect for all people; and

WHEREAS, The Family Y is a charitable, non-profit organization providing financial assistance for all of its programs, and it has awarded more than $643,000 in scholarships in 2007, primarily in the area of childcare, it being the largest provider of childcare in the CSRA; and

WHEREAS, The Family Y offers programs for people of all ages including recreational; special-needs and fitness aquatics; youth sports; after-school and full-time childcare; day camps; individual and group fitness for children, teens, adults and seniors; family programs; and community-based special events; and

WHEREAS, it currently operates eight facilities in Augusta, North Augusta, and Thomson, with a new facility opening in the Spring of 2008 in Aiken, South Carolina.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join together in recognizing The Family Y of Metropolitan Augusta and commend them for the valuable service provided to the citizens of the Augusta area and this state.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to The Family Y of Metropolitan Augusta.
