RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending the Georgia School for the Deaf Girls' Basketball Team as the
champions of the 31st Annual Girls' Mason-Dixon Basketball Tournament and
inviting them to appear before the House of Representatives; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the Georgia School for the Deaf Girls' Basketball team are the Champions of the
31st Annual Girls' Mason-Dixon Basketball Tournament held January 24-26, 2008,
in Jackson, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS,
the Mason-Dixon Basketball Tournament is the premier basketball tournament for
students from deaf schools in the southeastern United States, and this year's
tournament included 11 schools from ten different states; and
WHEREAS,
the Georgia School for the Deaf defeated the Florida School for the Deaf and
Blind 56-45 in the championship game; and
WHEREAS,
this is the second Girls' Mason-Dixon Tournament title that the school has won;
and
WHEREAS,
the team was ably led by Head Coach Danny Woolmaker, Assistant Coach Sheila
Johnson, Scorekeeper Denise Hunter, and Team Manager Ashley Baty;
and
WHEREAS,
three of the team members, Brittney Daughtry, Tanya Dawson, and Latonya Dawson
were selected as members of the 2008 All Tournament Team; and
WHEREAS,
Brittney Daughtry was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the 2008 Girls'
Mason-Dixon Basketball Tournament; and
WHEREAS,
the other outstanding team members were Maurissa Adams, Biunica English, Amy
Lee, Kamaria Peavy, Kandace Ross, Jessie Smith, Talaya Still, and Ryan Welch;
and
WHEREAS, in a world which consistently seems to accentuate the negative aspects of the actions of young people, it is abundantly fitting and proper for this body to recognize with particularity the superlative accomplishments of this extraordinary team of individuals.

NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body recognize and commend the 2008 Georgia School for the Deaf Girls'
Basketball Team on their outstanding accomplishments, and invite them to appear
before this body at a date and time designated by the Speaker of the House for
the purposes of being recognized by the House and receiving an appropriate copy
of this resolution.
