A RESOLUTION

Commending Dr. John C. Taylor; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Dr. John C. Taylor began his athletic career at the age of 60, when he completed his first 10 kilometer race in third place in his age group, and two years later he competed in his first triathlon, and now at the age of 86 he is still competing and was ranked second in the nation and first in the South East in his age group in 2006 by the United States Triathlon Association; and

WHEREAS, he won the gold medal in triathlon at the 2005 Senior Olympics in Pittsburgh, after winning silver in 5, 10, 20, 30, and 40 kilometer bicycle races; and

WHEREAS, this amazing athlete trains three times a week, running, swimming, riding his bicycle, and lifting weights, and he plans to enter seven triathlons this year, culminating with the Senior Olympics in Orlando in the fall; and

WHEREAS, he is fond of stating that common perception is that people over 70 are over the hill, but in his observation as a cyclist, when you get over the hill you go faster; and

WHEREAS, his goals for the future include a return to his birth state to compete in the national trials in San Francisco when he is 88 years old, to compete in triathlons in his 90s, and to live to see 120; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Taylor, who earned his doctorate at the age of 75, is proof that one need not take to the rocking chair after retirement but can continue to live an active and fulfilled life, a lesson all of us can take to heart.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body congratulate and commend Dr. John C. Taylor for his many impressive athletic achievements.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. John C. Taylor.
