RESOLUTION
Urging
the Congress of the United States to help ensure that legislation that brings
generic biotech drugs to the market faster includes provisions to ensure that
the public health is protected and that the ability of biotech companies to
recoup sufficient returns to keep them investing in this important enterprise is
also protected; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Georgia is at the epicenter of the explosion of life science discovery, and
innovation has fueled a dynamic economic engine for this state; and
WHEREAS,
biotech companies have played a key role in the emergence of our state as a
global leader in the discovery of cures for diseases that were previously
thought incurable; and
WHEREAS,
the discovery and development of biologics is expensive and time-consuming;
and
WHEREAS,
the legislature wishes to ensure that Georgia's biotech companies remain
economically viable; and
WHEREAS,
the legislature also wishes to ensure that new drugs are adequately tested
before they are released to the market; and
WHEREAS,
Georgia is committed to the principle that these innovative new medicines be
safe and affordable and that biotech companies receive protection for their
investment of time and resources necessary for the complex development of
innovative health care breakthroughs.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that this body hereby
urges the United States Congress to help ensure that any new legislation that
brings generic biotech drugs to the market faster includes provisions to ensure
that the public health is protected by adequate testing of follow-on biologics
and that the ability of biotech companies to recoup sufficient returns to keep
them investing in this important enterprise is also protected.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to each member
of the Georgia congressional delegation.
