RESOLUTION
Commending
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., was founded at Howard University in Washington,
D.C., by three young, African American men, A. Langston Taylor, Leonard F.
Morse, and Charles I. Brown; and
WHEREAS,
their intention was to establish a fraternity that exemplified the ideals of
brotherhood, scholarship, and service and one that viewed itself as a part of
the community; and
WHEREAS,
they believed that fraternity members should be judged on their own merits and
not by family background and affluence, race, nationality, skin tone, or hair
texture; and
WHEREAS,
from its inception, the fraternity has served as a mechanism for delivering
services to the community, an attitude reflected in the fraternity´s motto,
"Culture For Service and Service For Humanity"; and
WHEREAS,
today, the fraternity has grown into an international organization and includes
the Phi Beta Sigma Educational Foundation, the Phi Beta Sigma Housing
Foundation, the Phi Beta Sigma Federal Credit Union, and the Phi Beta Sigma
Charitable Outreach Foundation, and in 1920, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., was
founded as the sister organization of Phi Beta Sigma.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend the members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., for their
service to the community and the country.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Phi Beta
Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
