RESOLUTION
Commending
Colonel Gwendolyn Fryer; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Colonel Gwendolyn Fryer attended the Medical College of Georgia School of
Nursing in Augusta, Georgia, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science
Degree (Nursing) in 1974 and a Master of Science Degree (Medical-Surgical
Nursing, Teaching Specialization) in 1979; and
WHEREAS,
before beginning her active duty military career, Colonel Fryer was commissioned
a 1LT in the United States Army Reserve Nurse Corps in 1978 and served at the
382nd Field Hospital (now 3297th General Hospital) in Augusta, Georgia, while
concurrently completing seven years of civilian nursing experience;
and
WHEREAS,
Colonel Fryer was commissioned as an active duty Army Nurse Corps Officer in
1981 and served in various key assignments in the continental United States. Her
leadership and contributions positively impacted decision making at the
Departments of Defense, Army, and Veterans Administration, as well as at the
Office of the Surgeon General, Central Command, Medical Command, United States
Army Recruiting Command, and the Army Medical Department; and
WHEREAS,
Colonel Fryer has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal with fifth Oak Leaf
Cluster, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal with second Oak
Leaf Cluster, the National Defense Service Medal with two stars, the Global War
on Terrorism Service Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with bronze hourglass
device, and the Army Service Ribbon; and
WHEREAS,
in 2003 she was inducted into the prestigious Army Medical Department's Order of
Military Medical Merit; and
WHEREAS,
Colonel Fryer is actively involved in civic, professional, and church
activities; and
WHEREAS,
she is a contributing author of
Nursing Care of the
Elderly: Diagnosis, Interventions and
Outcomes and serves on the Advancement
Committee for the Medical College of Georgia School of Nursing; and
WHEREAS,
she has been featured in journals such as Minority Nurse Magazine, MCG Today,
and the James A. Haley Veterans Administration Forum. In addition, she was
featured in a New York Times interview (aired on public television) pertaining
to her role as Polytrauma Liaison Officer, as well as "The VA Polytrauma Centers
Rebuilding Wounded Lives: From Here to Home" (aired on military and VA
television networks); and
WHEREAS,
Colonel Fryer has one daughter, Gwendolyn Alexandria (Alex), who is an honor
student at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body recognize the long and distinguished military career of Colonel
Gwendolyn Fryer and her contributions to the State of Georgia and the
nation.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Colonel
Gwendolyn Fryer.
