A BILL to be entitled an Act to amend Part 2 of Article 6 of Chapter 7 of Title 17 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to insanity and mental incompetency, so as to change, reorganize, and clarify certain provisions relating to proceedings in cases involving a plea of mental incompetency to stand trial; to define terms; under certain circumstances, to provide for the prosecuting attorney to petition the probate court for the defendant's involuntary civil commitment or habilitative services; to provide that defendants who are charged with a nonviolent offense and found mentally incompetent to stand trial shall have the charges dismissed by operation of law under certain circumstances; to provide for related matters; to provide for an effective date and applicability; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.
