Senate remains solidly in GOP hands: The much ballyhooed 2006 election brought no changes to the state senate Tuesday night as the “balance of power” remains at 34 Republicans and 22 Democrats.
“Georgians like the way we are leading,” said Senate Majority Leader Tommie Williams. “The Senate has worked hard over the past four years to be the deliberative body and really listen to the people regarding legislation. I think we have given the people what they asked for and they have given us another two years to lead this state when it comes to education, health and safety issues.”
Control of the Senate changed following the 2002 election cycle when the Republicans took control of the legislature’s upper chamber after more than 134 years of Democratic rule. In 2004 the Republicans added four seats to their majority, giving them 34 seats.
"The Senate has a terrific group of men and women representing the people of Georgia," Senate President Pro Tempore Eric Johnson (R-Savannah). "Our new members, Bill Cowsert of Athens, Jack Murphy of Cumming, Lee Hawkins of Gainesville, Nan Orrock of Atlanta, Ron Ramsey of Lithonia and Gail Davenport of Jonesboro are going to be great additions to the Senate and we look forward to working with them."
A significant change in the Senate is the election of a Republican as lieutenant governor. Former Senator Casey Cagle (R-Gainesville) will take the helm of the Senate in January. |
