JAY NEAL HONORS LOCAL VOLUNTEER WITH LEGISLATIVE SERVICE AWARD ATLANTA—Georgia State Representative Jay Neal (R-Chickamauga) presented Tammy Pearson, founder and president of the Battlefield Civitan Club, with the Legislative Service Award for her outstanding service to the community. “Tammy has shown dedication to improving her community and to making our small corner of Georgia a better place to live,” Neal said. “I applaud her selfless actions and her commitment to the citizens of the Ft. Oglethorpe area.” The Legislative Service Award was created in 2008 by House Resolution 1081 to recognize deserving individuals. Each member of the Georgia House is authorized to present one award per year. Recipients receive a certificate and a pin bearing the seal of the Georgia House of Representatives. Pearson founded the Battlefield Civitan Club in 2007 and the club motto is ‘practice the Golden Rule and build upon it a nobler and better citizenship.’ Currently, the club is working with Heartland Ranch in Catoosa County. Heartland Ranch provides therapeutic riding for disabled children. The club will hold a fundraiser with Paula Deen to raise money for Heartland Ranch and will also begin a mentoring program. Other community projects have included a fundraiser to furnish a disabled adult’s apartment, provide holiday treats and a winter wonderland for nursing home residents, pay tuition for one student to attend the Harvest School for the Deaf, collect and deliver food for Widows Harvest Ministries, and care packages for service members. The Battlefield Civitan Club meets at 11:45 am the fourth Monday of each month at Constitution Hall in Ft. Oglethorpe.
