REPRESENTATIVE ED LINDSEY INTRODUCES LEGISLATION TO REFORM JUDICIAL ELECTIONS

ATLANTA—Georgia State Representative Edward Lindsey (R – Atlanta) formally introduced House Bill 97 this week, which addresses campaign finance reform for judiciary elections across the State of Georgia.  The legislation will serve to protect the independence and impartiality of the Georgia courts.

More specifically, HB 97 addresses the issues of recusal of judges from cases which are being argued by campaign contributors in order to protect the appearance of impartiality.  In addition, the bill also focuses on political parties’ participation in judicial races, and contribution limits for 527s and independent committees advocating the election or defeat of a particular candidate.

“This legislation is needed here in Georgia to protect the impartiality and independence of the judiciary in our state,” Lindsey said.  “One of the most sacred and significant facets of our judicial system in this nation is its character of non-partisan and independent elections.  We need to make sure it stays that way.”

HB 97 enjoys co-sponsorship from several legislators, including Representatives Joe Wilkinson (R – Sandy Springs), Rob Teilhet (D – Smyrna), Steve “Thunder” Tumlin (R – Marietta), Mike Jacobs (D – Atlanta), Harry Geisinger (R – Roswell), and Mary Margaret Oliver (D – Atlanta).
