Representative Ben Harbin is the Chairman of the Appropriations Committee of the Georgia House of Representatives, and represents House District 118, Evans, Georgia. Previously, Ben served for eight years as a member of the Appropriations Committee and ten years on the Insurance Committee in the House. Born in Lyons, Georgia, Ben has lived in Georgia his entire life growing up in Vidalia and Augusta. He graduated from the Georgia Military College with a degree in Business, and received the Graduate of Distinction award. He also attended Mercer University. Representative Harbin resides in Evans, Georgia with his wife, Hope and their children Caitlin and Hampton.
Ben was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1994, and is currently serving his second term as Chairman of the Appropriations Committee. Chairman Harbin’s involvement with state legislation has been one of bipartisanship and distinction. Representative Harbin is known for being able to build relationships across the aisle. Representative Harbin was also a ranking Republican on Reapportionment.
Chairman Harbin is actively involved in many local civic organizations including the Board of Directors for Child Enrichment/Child Advocacy Center and the Board of Trustees Georgia Military College Foundation. Representative Harbin has been honored with numberous awards including the Pediatrician Association's Legislator of the Year Award in 2000, the Medical Association of Georgia honored him with their Eagle Award in 2000, and Georgia Trend named him to the 1997 “40 under Forty.” The Representative has also received the Holocaust Commission Award, Family Physicians Award, Georgia Military College Young Alumni Award, and the Council on Aging Award. Representative Harbin is also a graduate of Leadership Georgia with the Class of 2000.
